Chapter Thirteen
Christy could see Tim, his strong hands, and gorgeous blue eyes. She saw them together holding hands as the sun spilled. Then they were dancing⦠her long white skirt swirling about her, and she saw a child that looked both a little like her, and a little like Timâ¦
And she could hear Timâs voice saying, âWake up, Christy.â
Christy woke with a start and sat bolt upright. To her surprise, she found Tim sitting on the chair beside her bed, reading from the old leatherbound bible that she had found in the roomâs dresser drawer. âTim⦠whaâ¦â Christy regained enough presence of mind to be embarrassed that he was seeing her in her nightgown âWhat are you doing here?â
Tim had an easy smile on his face as he reassured her. âNothing untoward,â he said. âI was simply in here to wake you up.â
Oddly, she believed him. Was this the first time sheâd ever trusted a man? She wasnât sure, but she knew that there were powerful feelings growing between her and Tim. Lord, she silently prayed, show me what I should do about this. Should I follow my heart, or my head?
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Tim rise from the seat beside her bed, âWell,â he said, turning to face the small roomâs dresser and put the Bible back on its top, âIâll go wait outside while you get dressed for the day. After that we should go get breakfast, get Alexâs medicine, and go home.â
âThat sounds like a good plan to me,â Christy said in turn. Tim left the room, and Christy was left alone. She rose from the bed, dressed for the day, and headed out into the long hallway that connected the rooms. Tim was waiting for her, just as he had promised, and Christy felt her heart do a funny little leap at the sight of him. Even wearing the worn, unwashed traveling clothes he had been wearing on their long journey to Grand Junction yesterday, he still looked just as dashing as any prince.
Almost unconsciously, she extended her hand for him to take. He did so, and Christy felt heat bloom from within her skin at the touch. Why am I like this around him? she thought, feeling her heart rate begin to soar. She felt like a schoolgirl with a crush.
Christy pulled her hand away, suddenly embarrassed. âLetâs go eat and get on the road,â she said, harsher than she intended to. Like a scared deer in front of a carriage, she hitched up her skirts and started off down the long hallway that led to the dining hall, at a pace somewhere between a walk and a run.
It felt like forever before they reached the dining hall, and when they got there, Christy and Tim had no choice but to stand together in line. They ate their food in silence, Tim looking at Christy with concern in his sparkling sapphire eyes all the while.
She knew she had hurt his
